From The Gym To The Beach: DBDB Dragon Boat Rules The Discovery Bay Community Races
How DBDB Training's strength-and-conditioning foundation powers our Dragon Boat crew to 1st and 2nd place finishes in Discovery Bay's annual Community Races — backed by a 10-week intensive block before the gun.
From The Gym To The Beach: DBDB Dragon Boat Rules The Discovery Bay Community Races
Every year, the Discovery Bay shoreline comes alive with the thump of drums, the splash of paddles and a crowd cheering on crews from across Lantau. It's one of the highlights of the DB calendar — and for the DBDB Training crew, it's become our second home.
The Discovery Bay Dragon Boat Tradition
Dragon Boat racing in Discovery Bay isn't just a race — it's a community ritual. Each year, crews of neighbours, parents, colleagues and friends form teams, train through the spring heat, and line up on race day ready to paddle for everything they've got. The atmosphere is electric: red tents on the sand, music blaring from the PA, and the beach packed with families come to watch their people fly across the water.
For DBDB, it's the perfect stage. We're a club built on community first, and Dragon Boat lets us show exactly what that means — men and women, beginners to seasoned athletes, pulling together as one.
How DBDB Training Is Built For Dragon Boat
Here's the thing most people miss about Dragon Boat: it's not really an arm sport. A strong crew is powered by the legs, core and back — exactly the engine we build year-round at DBDB Training.
Our regular MetCon, Bells & Bars and HIIT sessions develop the raw ingredients a paddler needs:
- Explosive leg drive — kettlebell swings, squats and lunges train the powerful leg push that initiates every stroke.
- A bulletproof core — carries, planks and rotational work transfer force from the floor of the boat through the paddle without leaking power.
- Grip and pulling strength — deadlifts, rows and farmer's carries build the back and grip that hold a paddle under load for 200+ strokes.
- Engine capacity — our conditioning blocks expand the aerobic base you need to stay sharp from the start gun to the finish line.
So when race season rolls around, our crew isn't starting from zero. They're walking onto the sand already strong, already fit, already conditioned. The boat just lets them express it.
The 10-Week Dragon Boat Intensive
Ten weeks out from race day, we flip the switch. Alongside our normal training, the crew moves into a dedicated Dragon Boat Intensive Block — a focused ramp-up that converts gym-built strength into boat-ready power and timing.
The block layers in:
-
On-water paddling sessions to dial in technique, synchronise the crew and learn to paddle as one organism.
-
Race-pace interval conditioning that mimics the demands of a 500m heat — short, brutal efforts with incomplete recovery.
-
Paddle-specific strength work — heavy rows, pull-downs and rotational presses that groove the exact stroke pattern.
-
Core and connection drills so every paddler locks their stroke into the timing of the drummer and the sweep.
By race day, the crew is peaking — strong, sharp and completely in sync. That's the DBDB way: train hard all year, then sharpen the blade when it matters.
Community Race Results: 1st & 2nd (2024 & 2025)
All that preparation has paid off. In back-to-back years, the DBDB crew has stood on the Discovery Bay Community Race podium:
- 2024 — 1st place, Community Race
- 2025 — 2nd place, Community Race
Going from first to second doesn't tell the whole story — the field gets faster every year, and backing up a title with another podium finish shows this crew isn't a one-hit wonder. The standard at Discovery Bay keeps rising, and DBDB keeps rising with it.
More Than A Race: A Crew For Everyone
What makes us proudest isn't the medals — it's who's holding them. The DBDB Dragon Boat crew is a genuine mix: men and women, first-timers and veterans, all ages, all backgrounds, all wearing the same kit and pulling the same blade.
That's the whole point of the club. You don't need to be a lifelong athlete to join a crew like this — you need to be willing to show up, train, and belong to something bigger than yourself. The strength and fitness come from the training. The belonging comes from the team.
